Ashton Finch and Myles Hale: The backstory

The afternoon Ashton Finch lost everything was one he’d never completely forget. The details had gone fuzzy over time, but he remembered what had happened, he remembered the burning anger and confusion at the back of his 11-year old mind. He recalled the adults and the paramedics trying to comfort him, but their words were like distant rain.  Ashton remembered sleeping in a room all by himself until more adults took him to his parent's funeral. They passed in that horrible house fire, someone explained to him, though he already knew. He didn’t cry that day, but the flames of anger at the back of his mind ignited.  After the funeral, Ashton was handed over to foster care. He kept moving, family after family, house after house. No one seemed to want to mind the kid who never talked or smiled, the kid who didn’t seem to care about anything for years on end.  They put him in all different kinds of therapy in hopes of fixing the broken boy, but no therapist could coax h...

Prompt + story

Prompt: "Just take a deep breath or something!"    "TAKE A DEEP BREATH? It feels like my insides are being RIPPED OUT!"   The air between the forest and mountains was chilly to say the least, even in the middle of summer. Zain and Emma's group had split up, so they could patrol in pairs. The four of them had walked through the forest together, made a rendezvous point, and then gone in different directions.  Emma looked over at the mountains. They were so close, she could almost touch them, but before leaving camp, Master Eligio (Who served as camp director) had warned them only to watch the mountains, never to touch them or walk on their rock.  She'd only found out there were  mountains yesterday, despite spending three summers at camp, defending the magic forest. Her thoughts drifted back to the mountain. It was a snowy white, even just five feet from ground level, which Emma found strange, but then again, if the forest was magic if everyone back at camp c...

Oliver Mcdonald had a farm... E-i-e-i-o

(This scene takes place after a battle and the characters are all about 14) Oliver Mcdonald lay on the ground, a sword protruding from his gut. His breathing was ragged, but at least he was alive. For how long, though, none of his friends could guess.  Skye Verso wrapped her hands around the hilt of the blade while Dove Paloma squeezed Oliver's hand. Kai Verso held bandages ready for the moment the sword was extracted.  “3… 2… 1…” Skye yanked the sword out and it clattered on the grass. Kai immediately set to work, bandaging the stab wound as fast as his fingers would allow.  Oliver was becoming limp in Dove’s arms, but his breathing was steadying. She let out a sob-sigh and began to quietly sing their old joke.  “Ol’ Mcdonald had a farm-” her voice cracked.  Kai smiled crookedly and continued the whispered song, “E-i-e-i-o.” “Shut up,” groaned Oliver’s barely conscious form.  “Let’s get you to the infirmary, ol,” Skye said meekly.  He tried to say som...

Prompt: “How many times do you think a heart can break?"

The wind raged on the mountain, snow hailing down on Luke and Albina. Normal people would have gotten frostbite, being out in this weather, yet neither girl nor boy felt anything but the cold at the beginning of a calm winter.  Of course, Luke knew that was because they had Queen Icylin’s gift. The Queen… she’d given orders to avoid the forest below with more caution than usual. She’d told her warriors the spirits were loose and she’d sent Eira to warn the guardians of the place. Oddly, the forest-people didn’t give themselves a name. All Luke actually knew about them was their ability to transform into animals. Albina yelled something, though it was whisked away by the wind, and pointed to a hole in the mountain. Luke got the message, and the pair trudged toward the Cave.  The second they stepped inside, Luke’s senses took note of way too many things at once. He knew the information could be useful, but he also knew he couldn’t throw it around or see it until he needed it, th...

Dialogue prompt (Story)

DIALOGUE PROMPT: “Wanting a Mcdonalds is not a medical emergency.” Sydney and Charlie were staying over at Leo’s house. The trio had decided to spend a weekend together, spending nights at Leo’s place and days outside. Leo lay on a couch, reading a book, when Charlie and Sydney charged in, yelling, “LEO!! IT’S A MEDICAL EMERGENCY!”  Leo was glad his dad was on a business trip, or he’d be in trouble for his friends yelling in the house. He sat up, and looked at his friends. both were just fine.  “What’s a medical emergency?” he asked, confused. He’d trained as a medic at camp, but there was nothing wrong with either of his friends. “We need Mcdonalds, Leo!” Charlie burst out.  “Lots of Mcdonalds, Leo!” Sydney agreed. Leo rolled his eyes, “Wanting Mcdonalds is not a medical emergency.” His friends pouted and gave him puppy eyes, Sydney even made her baby seal face, which she saved for special occasions.  “Okay, Mcdonalds. Because it’s a medical emergency,” Leo l...

Excerpt (Character death😔)

This is an excerpt from a novel I'm hoping to finish soon. It's a character death, but the whole excerpt is a bit long, so I'm just giving you the end, for now. Background information? This takes place about two days after a battle with a dragon seeking revenge. The location is a sort of summer camp in a forest for kids who can transform into animals (one animal per kid). Sydney and Charlie are 15 and Leo is 16. The others are side characters and I haven't given them exact ages yet, but they range from 13 - 17. That's all I had to say, Stay safe guys, and Happy new year (I know I'm pretty late).   Sydney couldn’t take it anymore. Charlotte (One of the medics who had taken over so Leo, Ashley, Lucas, and Sydney could rest) promised her she’d watch Charlie and wake her if he needed her or Leo, so Sydney dejectedly lay down in her bunk in the little cabin she’d shared with Leo and Charlie for the past three years.  She woke up at around 11 in the night to find Leo ...

The Memory Tree

A tree looms over me. From afar, it looks like a normal cherry blossom, but close up I can see it's special. It has an aura of the past, as though someone zapped it into the future. The clouds drift away, revealing the bright afternoon sun, causing the tree to glimmer. As my eyes adjust to the glimmering tree and the bright sun, I realize it’s only the light pink leaves that are shimmering.  I reach up and brush my fingers against a leaf. Then, I lightly pluck it and turn it over. A picture shimmers there, a picture of a little me and another girl. Amazed, I pluck another leaf, this one with words. As I read, my theory is confirmed. This is the memory tree. A tree that holds the beauty of my world within its leaves, for every leaf, holds a forgotten memory. Suddenly, the tree has me entranced. I must read more, see more wonderful, beautiful memories. I pluck leaf after leaf, remembering memory after memory. I reach up, hungrily, wanting to see more of the beauty of my world. My mem...

Another description

Hot. Burning. Fire.  coming this way. must run, must move.  I try, but I cant. I'm anchored to the ground.  Fire. Burning everything in its path. Try harder, move still can't. Heat, licking my body. Doom, spreading through me Fire, burning me... and then, it was just another that the fire has destroyed. Hey guys, Nia here, just wanted to give you some info on the description. In case you haven't guessed, it's from the perspective of a tree during a forest fire. I wrote it because this is what I think a tree would feel when it's watching its friends burn down and then ultimately, being burned itself. And yes, plants can feel, they can be hurt, and maybe they don't have emotions, but they can still tell when danger is near, and they even communicate with other plants. Plants are amazing, and they give us so much, I feel it's only fair if we protect them in return.  #SaveTheTrees

A handy guide to keeping a journal!

Keeping a journal is a great idea right now (and always). Writing down your thoughts and feeling can be very therapeutic and keeping a journal has been known to decrease stress. How should you start, you might ask? It's very simple, and here is how: Step 1: Find a notebook. This can be a simple composition book or anything you like! if you want, you can decorate your book, or you can leave it plain. There are plenty of cute ideas online! Step 2: Get something to write with. Now that you have a book, find something to write with. You can use pens, pencils, markers, whatever you want. However, I do recommend just using a simple ballpoint pen, because journals are meant for you, spelling mistakes are okay, and you don't need to think twice about what you write. Markers tend to bleed through the pages, and pencils fade over time. Step 3: Write. Whether you write every day, once a week, or just when you feel like it, remember to update your diary. Somedays, you might want to jot dow...
