Excerpt (Character death😔)
This is an excerpt from a novel I'm hoping to finish soon. It's a character death, but the whole excerpt is a bit long, so I'm just giving you the end, for now. Background information? This takes place about two days after a battle with a dragon seeking revenge. The location is a sort of summer camp in a forest for kids who can transform into animals (one animal per kid). Sydney and Charlie are 15 and Leo is 16. The others are side characters and I haven't given them exact ages yet, but they range from 13 - 17. That's all I had to say, Stay safe guys, and Happy new year (I know I'm pretty late).
Sydney couldn’t take it anymore. Charlotte (One of the medics who had taken over so Leo, Ashley, Lucas, and Sydney could rest) promised her she’d watch Charlie and wake her if he needed her or Leo, so Sydney dejectedly lay down in her bunk in the little cabin she’d shared with Leo and Charlie for the past three years.
She woke up at around 11 in the night to find Leo picking up a few of the random daggers (He’d already cleaned up the clothes). She gave him a quick hug before the two of them rushed back to the infirmary to check on charlie.
There were only two occupied beds at that point. In one, a red-haired boy was sleeping with a bandage around his head and a cast on his arm and leg. In the other, Charlie was awake, breathing heavily.
“Woah, you okay?” Leo asked, immediately checking his friend's temperature. “Charlie you’re burning up again!” Sydney gave them a panicky look.
“I’m-” he sighed. “Not too great. Do me a favor? Leo put down that bottle, medicine won’t help. And… Take me to that courtyard? The one with the big garden?”
“Charlie…” He gave her a pleading look. “Okay. Let’s go.”
The pair helped Charlie to his feet and supported him as the trio walked to the courtyard. They sat with their backs leaning against the tree in the center.
“Guys, this is the end for me,” Charlie whispered, looking up at the stars. There were tears in Sydney’s Eyes.
“Don’t say that, you’ll be just fine,” she said, her voice cracking.
“Yeah man,” Leo said in a fake confident voice. Sydney could hear the emotions behind it, and apparently so could Charlie.
“Do you really believe that?” he asked, quietly. Neither Sydney or Leo answered.
“I don’t mind dying, I really don't, guys. Just… watch over each other. And- Tell Kai and Skye about me someday, would you?”
“Of course we will,” Leo whispered.
“Don’t leave us Charlie,” a tear rolled down Sydney’s cheek.
“I’ll always be with you two in spirit, you know that,” he put one arm around Sydney and one around Leo.
“That’s why you wanted to come out here-” Leo whispered sadly. Charlie nodded,
“I- I’d rather be with you guys, out here.” He gestured to the courtyard.
“Charlie-” Sydney whispered.
“Take care of each other, you guys were the best family I could have asked for,” he said in a barely audible voice.
“You idiot Charlie, I told you you’re not allowed to die,” Leo said halfheartedly.
Charlie smiled and closed his eyes for the last time. Sydney sobbed into his shoulder, and tears rolled down Leo’s face as he hugged her.
