Excerpt (Character deathđ)
This is an excerpt from a novel I'm hoping to finish soon. It's a character death, but the whole excerpt is a bit long, so I'm just giving you the end, for now. Background information? This takes place about two days after a battle with a dragon seeking revenge. The location is a sort of summer camp in a forest for kids who can transform into animals (one animal per kid). Sydney and Charlie are 15 and Leo is 16. The others are side characters and I haven't given them exact ages yet, but they range from 13 - 17. That's all I had to say, Stay safe guys, and Happy new year (I know I'm pretty late).
Sydney couldnât take it anymore. Charlotte (One of the medics who had taken over so Leo, Ashley, Lucas, and Sydney could rest) promised her sheâd watch Charlie and wake her if he needed her or Leo, so Sydney dejectedly lay down in her bunk in the little cabin sheâd shared with Leo and Charlie for the past three years.
She woke up at around 11 in the night to find Leo picking up a few of the random daggers (Heâd already cleaned up the clothes). She gave him a quick hug before the two of them rushed back to the infirmary to check on charlie.
There were only two occupied beds at that point. In one, a red-haired boy was sleeping with a bandage around his head and a cast on his arm and leg. In the other, Charlie was awake, breathing heavily.
âWoah, you okay?â Leo asked, immediately checking his friend's temperature. âCharlie youâre burning up again!â Sydney gave them a panicky look.
âIâm-â he sighed. âNot too great. Do me a favor? Leo put down that bottle, medicine wonât help. And⌠Take me to that courtyard? The one with the big garden?â
âCharlieâŚâ He gave her a pleading look. âOkay. Letâs go.â
The pair helped Charlie to his feet and supported him as the trio walked to the courtyard. They sat with their backs leaning against the tree in the center.
âGuys, this is the end for me,â Charlie whispered, looking up at the stars. There were tears in Sydneyâs Eyes.
âDonât say that, youâll be just fine,â she said, her voice cracking.
âYeah man,â Leo said in a fake confident voice. Sydney could hear the emotions behind it, and apparently so could Charlie.
âDo you really believe that?â he asked, quietly. Neither Sydney or Leo answered.
âI donât mind dying, I really don't, guys. Just⌠watch over each other. And- Tell Kai and Skye about me someday, would you?â
âOf course we will,â Leo whispered.
âDonât leave us Charlie,â a tear rolled down Sydneyâs cheek.
âIâll always be with you two in spirit, you know that,â he put one arm around Sydney and one around Leo.
âThatâs why you wanted to come out here-â Leo whispered sadly. Charlie nodded,
âI- Iâd rather be with you guys, out here.â He gestured to the courtyard.
âCharlie-â Sydney whispered.
âTake care of each other, you guys were the best family I could have asked for,â he said in a barely audible voice.
âYou idiot Charlie, I told you youâre not allowed to die,â Leo said halfheartedly.
Charlie smiled and closed his eyes for the last time. Sydney sobbed into his shoulder, and tears rolled down Leoâs face as he hugged her.
